Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction

Sexual health is an important part of the overall physical and emotional health in everyone. Despite, erectile dysfunction is not a threat to human life; nevertheless, it also cannot be considered a trivial problem.

The term erectile dysfunction has come to replace the outdated term ‘impotence’ which is not used anymore because the ‘impotence’ is not a clear interpretation of this problem. Moreover, the use of this term became the basis for a gross misunderstanding of the condition. Men suffering from ED are not sterile, but maintain all the normal sexual characteristics of all other men who retain the ability to orgasm and ejaculate with the exception of not being able to obtain a functional erection.

At some period of life, most men can have problems with achieving and/or maintaining an erection which may be due to excessive stress, fatigue, or consuming alcohol in large quantities. However, if the problem persists, it is most likely a symptom of ED.

Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

treatment of erectile dysfunction in malesErectile dysfunction affects 100-120 million men Worldwide. A Massachusetts Male Aging Study found that 52% of men from 40 to 70 years suffered from ED in some degree. And, most of those studied men suffered without saying a word because they believed that nothing could be done to the problem due to the fact that they were aging.

Many men believe that erectile dysfunction is inevitable with age.  Although the number of men with ED increases with age, it is likely that the development of erectile dysfunction is a consequence of treatment with certain medications or other medical conditions. Depressed men are also noted to say that they often experience erectile dysfunction. Alcohol abuse, smoking or taking drugs can also lead to Erectile Dysfunction.

Regardless of the underlying cause of erectile dysfunction, it affects the quality of life for men and for those who are close to them. The problem can be expressed in the loss of a sense of personal dignity, a feeling that a man has ceased to be a real man and even can lead to emotional and physical distancing from friends and relatives, thus exacerbating the problem.

Discuss the Problem

A lot of men are ashamed to speak with their sexual partner about the problem of erectile dysfunction and this is a concern too. It is important to discuss your feelings with your partner in order to enlist one’s support and assistance. In most cases, your sexual partner will also be relieved and she will want to discuss it and help find a way to solve the problem.

Men do not inquire about treatment for ED, believing that nothing can be done. However, this is actually not the case. Erectile dysfunction can be treated in men in overwhelming numbers. You should not feel uncomfortable discussing the issue with your doctor. It is extremely important to be completely candid with one, presenting an accurate and comprehensive picture which enables him or her to prescribe adequate treatment, provide the necessary information and give appropriate support.

It is advisable that you visit your doctor together with your sexual partner so you both can learn more about the condition and the real possibilities of treatment. You’ll learn what choices you have and will be able to choose the type of treatment that is most suitable for you personally and for your relationship with your partner. Currently, there is a wide range of surgical, pharmacological and other treatments for ED.

Treatments for ED

There are two main types of treatments for ED.

The Invasive therapy involves the introduction of medicines into the urethra, introduction of injections into the penis (corpora cavernosa), prosthetic penises and vascular surgery.

The Non-invasive therapy includes psychotherapy, drug treatment (PDE5 inhibitors) and the use of vacuum pumps. It should be noted that today’s men, suffering from erectile dysfunction, increasingly prefer to choose therapy with the oral drugs, such as Cialis, Viagra, Levitra have been developed and approved.

CIALIS

Cialis, with tadalafil as an active ingredient, is the brand name drug which passed numerous studies on efficacy and safety before entering the market in 2003. The Eli Lilly Company, its manufacturer, invested millions  into the study of the drug which is a direct cause of its high cost. In light of these studies, it guarantees an effective solution to ED and proclaims that when taking Cialis, your health is not exposed to harmful effects. Men ranging from 22 to 82 years old took part in over sixty clinical trials which have proven the drug’s safety and efficacy.

Regardless of the severity of ED, Cialis improved erections in 81% of men, and the drug was well tolerated by those who took part. Studies have also found that Cialis may be used together with fatty food and alcohol which are frequent attributes of an intimate evening. This is another argument in favor of the drug. However, it should be noted that alcohol itself initiates erectile disorders and its continuous consumption leads to the formation of ED.

Statistical Findings of Cialis

Numerous long-term studies have also proven that Cialis has no effect on male hormones (there were no changes in the levels of testosterone and pituitary hormones which regulate the reproductive organs). Concerning the relationship between reproductive health and Cialis, studies have shown that the drug has no effect on sperm quality in men treated for six months at a dose of 20 mg daily.

Another impressive figure: the standard dose of Cialis (20 mg) facilitated the resumption of erections in 68% of men diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, which has been substantiated in clinical trials. At the same time, it was established that there was no connection between the taking Cialis and symptoms of impaired vision.

Regarding the impact of the drug on blood vessels and the heart, in healthy men, Cialis does not cause changes in systolic and diastolic blood pressure when standing and lying down, and it does not affect blood flow and frequency of contractions of the heart muscle. This is according to clinical trials of the drug which was based on the fact that 88% of men who took Cialis after a period of 30 minutes achieved an erection. This study proves the absolute efficacy of the drug. Also, the conference of sexologists, which took place in Denver, Colorado (USA), found that Cialis has an improving effect on cancer patients, in terms of sexual health, who have had their prostate removed.

VIAGRA

Along with Cialis, VIAGRA (active ingredient: sildenafil citrate)  is one of the most effective drugs for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. It works by stimulating the synthesis of cGMP (Cyclic guanosine monophosphate). This acid accumulates in the tissue of the penis and leads to a relaxation of the corpora cavernosa cells, which in turn, leads to blood filling of the penis.

According to various studies, the effectiveness of treatment with VIAGRA is approximately 60-90%. Viagra, created by the company Pfizer (USA), has been used in medical practice for treating erectile dysfunction throughout the World for quite a long time (13 years). The drug enjoys enormous popularity, despite the relatively high cost.

Before the release of Viagra, erectile dysfunction was treated by installing a prosthetic penis, or by introducing drugs into the cavernous body. Vascular surgery and vacuum pumps have been distributed to a lesser degree. In this regard, Viagra is an innovative method of solving the problem of erectile dysfunction since a positive and sufficient effect can be achieved by taking just one pill.

Viagra has no effects on reproductive function. Taking the drug enhances the arteries and increases blood flow to the penis. But when the arousal is absent an erection will not appear. In other words, an erection won’t disturb you at a company meeting.

Features of Viagra

Viagra starts to work after 30-60 minutes and the effect lasts at least 4 hours after ingestion. Viagra improves erections in 76% of cases and most men say the drug improvement occurs after the first or second dose. After the third dose, an even better effect is observed, making Viagra a very important ED treatment.

Of course, it is necessary to comply with the doctor’s recommendations on the use of Viagra. Take it slowly: one tablet is consumed approximately one hour before sexual activity. It is better to take a pill in between meals (i.e. not after a heavy meal and not on an empty stomach). Do not abuse the drug and use it more than once a day.

However, there are restrictions on the duration of the treatment. Many men take Viagra on an everyday basis and do not notice a decline in its action. But despite all VIAGRA’s effectiveness and safety, the drug is not a vitamin supplement, not a stimulant and not a panacea for sexual weakness.

Levitra

Levitra, which received the approval of FDA in 2003, has become one of the most popular means to treat erectile dysfunction. Levitra begins to act very quickly, usually within 15-30 minutes. Another positive feature of Levitra is being well tolerated in patients and, due to this, the drug is suitable for older men and patients with cardiovascular diseases, high cholesterol levels and diabetes, more than other drugs (CIALIS and VIAGRA). The active ingredient in LEVITRA is vardenafil hydrochloride, the effect of which lasts 5 hours, allowing men to achieve an erection during this period. The high efficacy of Levitra has been proven in clinical trials in 80% of men.

In addition, Levitra produces no sustainable side effects in the health of men and is absolutely harmless to the tissues. Levitra is also capable of increasing the duration of the second erection which should be obtained after the first ejaculation.
